Liebster Award – Episode II: Attack of the Blogs

Liebster Award

Well, looky looky. I’ve received my second Leibster Award nomination. And the great thing about these blogging awards is that simply responding to the nomination means I’ve won it. I’ll take any accolade I can get (except for a “Participation Award,” that’s just demeaning). This time around, my Liebster comes courtesy of none other than Mr. Panda of Mr. Panda’s Video Game Reviews. Let’s all give him a big round of applause.

Picard

Of course, receiving a Liebster Award comes at a price means I must also perform some requirements. Mr. Panda stated that there are two requirements, but last time I did this, there were three. So I’m still going to go with three, as a means to stretch this out and give myself that many more pats on the back.

  • Requirement 1 is to thank the person who nominated you (already done) and answer the eleven questions they asked you in their nomination (getting to that).
  • Requirement B is that I must list eleven facts about my glorious self.
  • Requirement Yellow dictates that I must nominate some fellow bloggers and ask them some questions of my own.

So let’s get cracking on all this, shall we?

Question time!

Totoro Hoola Hoop

1: Nintendo or Sega?

Nintendo. Why is this a question?

2: Favorite video game console?

Without question, it’s the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. No other console houses so many classics that have defied aging. From its launch with Super Mario World to its closing with the likes of Super Mario RPG, Kirby Super Star, and Kirby’s Dream Land 3, it just kept popping out timeless classic after timeless classic.

Sure, the NES, N64, Wii, PS2 and Genesis all have a special place in my heart, and I’m really enjoying the Wii U and PS4, but the SNES still takes the cake without question.

3: Favorite video game?

Wow, you’re really asking this big of a question this soon? Okay, here it goes…

Are you ready for this?

My absolute, honest-to-goodness, unquestionable, undefeated, untouchable, unapproachable, undisputed, most favoritiest favorite game of all time is…

Is…

IS…

Oh, wait a minute. I still plan on making my list of favorite games sometime in the not-too-distant future. Silly me, I don’t want to spoil that here.

Disgust Exit

4: Favorite video game soundtrack?

The Donkey Kong Country series easily stands out for me, with Donkey Kong Country 2 having the best soundtrack of the bunch (though Tropical Freeze comes shockingly close). DKC2’s soundtrack is perfection.

Other favorites include Super Mario RPG, the Super Mario Galaxy games, Symphony of the Night, Shadow of the Colossus, Nights: Into Dreams, Secret of Mana, Banjo-Kazooie, and a few others.

5: Favorite song from a video game?

I don’t usually like to claim a singular favorite when asked this question, because there are so many that stand out. But considering that In a Snow-Bound Land from Donkey Kong Country 2 seems to always be the first one that pops into my head when asked this question, I think it’s safe to say that it is probably my favorite. It’s so soothing, so enchanting, so haunting. The fact that such a beautiful piece of music plays in some of the game’s hardest stages is a testament to DKC2’s (and composer David Wise’s) brilliance in crafting such beautiful contrasts.

6: Favorite genre of Game?

Platformers. Whether 2D or 3D, platformers somehow best represent the very essence of game design, and have produced more timeless classics than any other genre. The runner-up would be RPGs, though I admit I tend to love more untraditional RPGs like the Mario RPGs, Secret of Mana, Undertale, and titles like that, as opposed to traditional JRPGs like Final Fantasy and western RPGs like Skyrim, which I often grow bored with.

7: Favorite non-gaming related hobby?

Movies (obviously). Particularly animated movies (also obviously).

I also enjoy writing (both for this blog and creative writing) and drawing. I’m not about to brag about my drawing ability in the slightest, but I do love to draw my own stuff. I also enjoy doing some video editing, and am looking into game design, so hopefully I can one day put all of these things together to become more than just hobbies.

8: Person you look up to most?

There are all kinds of answers I could give here, from the personal and sentimental, to the more creatively influential. For now I’ll just go with the safe choice and say… my dog.

Chewbacca T. Dog

“Total badass.”

9: Favorite quote?

Honestly, there are too many to list. Most of them from movies. “To infinity and beyond!” is a pretty good one.

10: Favorite place to visit?

The Disney theme parks. I’m an annual pass holder at Disneyland, and can’t get enough of the place. I’ve only been to Disney World once, but it was awesome! I really want to go back and ride the new Frozen Ever After ride at Epcot!

11: Place you would most like to visit someday?

I’m going to sound like such a weeb for saying this, but Japan. I’ve always wanted to go to Japan, and would love to make that a reality one day. They make all that stuff I like. And Japan loves Frozen as much as I do!

"Those hip sways though!"

“Those hip sways though!”

Now for some ca-razy facts!

Fact 1: I attended E3 from 2009-2014. Hopefully, I’ll be making a comeback next year. And hopefully Nintendo will have a bigger lineup.

Fact 2: As of this blog, I have 128 video game reviews written on Wizard Dojo. Super Mario 128 confirmed!

Fact 3: As of this blog, I have 81 animation reviews written on Wizard Dojo. I really, really need to catch up there.

Paper JamFact 4: My favorite Nintendo character, and favorite video game character period, is Bowser. Other favorite Nintendo characters include Mario, Rosalina, Geno, Fawful, Dixie Kong, Kirby, King Dedede and Ganon, while some of my favorite non-Nintendo game characters include Mega Man, Dr. Robotnik (I refuse to call him Eggman), Alucard from Castlevania, Gruntilda from Banjo-Kazooie, Cave Johnson from Portal 2 (J.K. Simmons!), Victor Sullivan from the Uncharted series, and Drippy from Ni no Kuni.

Fact 5: My favorite filmmaker is Hayao Miyazaki. Though I also really love the Pixar guys (particularly Brad Bird, Pete Docter, and Andrew Stanton), Isao Takahata, Steven Spielberg, and Alfred Hitchcock.

Calcifer

Fact 6: I have the platinum trophies in Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, and Uncharted 4 (yes, I’m going to toot my own horn here).

Fact 7: I launched Wizard Dojo on Christmas day 2014, and have made sure to post at least one new blog every week. Usually more, though I try to make sure I actually have something to write about, and not just throw a couple of sentences together and and publish it just so I have something for the sake of having it. In the words of Sonic the Hedgehog “That’s no good!”

Fact 8: I hope to get back into the YouTube game soon. Hopefully I can think of a worthwhile series or whatever to serve as an entertaining alternative to my blogging (I’m really grasping at straws with these “facts” now. I’m really not that interesting).

Fact 9: Though I’ve rarely mentioned it here on Wizard Dojo, I am actually big fan of professional wrestling (stop laughing!). Though I only became a regular viewer of WWE programming in 2004 (after seeing it here and there in my younger days), I have become quite the historian/trivia expert on the subject, and have also become a big fan of some independent and Japanese wrestling promotions over the years (though sadly I haven’t seen as much of them for a while now. There are only so many hours in a day).

Fact 10: This is the 350th overall blog on Wizard Dojo.

Fact 11: As mentioned in my “non-gaming hobbies” answer, I quite enjoy creative writing and drawing. Though, once again, my abilities in those areas may not be anything to brag about, I do have several creations lined up that, hopefully, I can do something with one day (again, grasping at straws. I’m repeating myself now).

And now let’s close this out my nominating some fellow bloggers and asking them some questions for some reason. Some of you may have already received a Liebster Award in the past, but I’m nominating you anyway, because I only read so many blogs. And I gave myself this second self-loving award post, so you can too, if you’re up for it.

The nominees are…

NintendoBound

After Story

Miketendo64

Extra Life Reviews

Revaryk

Video Games Nebula

Future Pixar

Very Very Gaming

And well, that’s enough for now. As for the questions, here are eleven I think are fun or whatever…I guess…

1: Favorite video game genre?

2: Favorite video game console?

3: What do you think are the three most important aspects to making a great video game?

4: Why did you start blogging?

5: Favorite color (extremely important)?

6: Favorite video game character (or maybe top 3 or 5 or whatever)?

7: What are your hobbies outside of video games?

8: If you could make your own video game, what genre would it fall under, and what are some of the gameplay features you would want to include?

9: Favorite animated movie character (again, maybe 3 or 5)?

10: Who is your video game or animated character crush (why am I going here)?

11: If you could live in one video game world, which one would it be and why?

Well, that’s that. Looks like I’ve wrapped up this second Liebster Award of mine. Hopefully you had some decent fun reading it, and another big thanks to Mr. Panda for the nomination. I hope you keep reading my crap. See you next time!

Well, congrats, and keep up the good work! Anyway, since you’ve listed a lot of questions on here, I thought that I would put down some answers of my own too:

    1. Nintendo or Sega? – Nintendo
    2. Favorite console? – A tie between the Super NES and origial PlayStation. Those two consoles are the undisputed kings of JRPGs. So many great RPGs on those two consoles – Final Fantasy VII (though I know you dislike it immensely), Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, Tales of Phantasia (SNES version though), Front Mission, both Parasite Eve games, Xenogears (my favorite Square RPG), Star Ocean: The Second Story, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Front Mission 3, and many more. Sure the GameCube, N64, Sega Saturn, PS2 and Wii all hold special places in my heart, but I spent the most time on the SNES and PS1.
    3. Favorite video game? – Super Metroid. By a mile.
    4. Favorite game soundtrack? – Tough one for me. Xenogears’ soundtrack is breathtakingly amazing, Fire Emblem Awakening’s soundtrack is also superb, Persona 4’s soundtrack is also great too, Metal Gear Solid 2’s is great, as well as the first MGS….so yeah…tough one for me because there is just so many to choose from.
    5. Favorite game song? – Again, another tough one for me. But if there is one that stands out, it’s probably Devine Decree from Fire Emblem Awakening. Freakin’ epic.
    6. Favorite game genre? – A tie between the Metroidvania style games and JRPGs. Especially the survival horrror Metroidvanias, such as the old school Resident Evil games.
    7. Favorite non-gaming hobby? – Anime, but movies in a close second.
    8. Favorite new game? – Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. Fun as hell, great soundtrack, great characters, and good story. Oh, and Maiko is best girl. Speaking of which, do you plan on doing a review of TMS#FE later on?
    9. Favorite quote? – Probably from former Detroit Pistons Bad Boy Isiah Thomas: “You can say what you want about me, but you can’t say that I’m not a winner.”
    10. Favorite place to visit? – Many. Cedar Point, Boston, Washington D.C., Florida, the list goes on.
    11. Place that I want to visit the most? – Obviously, Japan.

Awesome, congrats on your second nomination! I’m glad to have nominated you. Great answers too. I approve of your DKC2 love for video game soundtrack and song. I can’t stress enough about how great every song in that game is. David Wise is a genius. Also cute dog!

And regarding the B requirement, I guess somewhere along the chain, that got lost. Either that or I didn’t pay enough attention and didn’t include it. Either way, I enjoyed reading your facts! That’s a lot of your reviews! I can’t wait for your 129th review of Mario 128! Thanks for responding and thanks for the shoutout!

Yeah, Nintendo has had the overall better track record – I don’t think anyone could seriously contest that.

I agree that the Super Nintendo was a great console, but I’m not sure how I’d answer that question because I’ve found that console libraries tend to be difficult to compare to each other. Maybe it’s just me.

Donkey Kong Country 2 certainly has one of the best soundtracks in the medium’s history. I personally am fond of Forest Interlude, though there are several amazing tracks to be found there. When it comes to great video game music, I’d also say the Fire Emblem, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Ace Attorney series also have a plethora of great tracks – that’s just scratching the surface.

I visited Japan three years ago; I met one of my friends there, and he showed me around Yokohama and Shibuya (funnily enough, I had completed my first playthrough of The World Ends With You earlier that year). It was really cool; certainly a drastic change of pace from the areas I’m used to. I highly recommend going; I think you’d like it.

Thanks for the nomination! I always love reading your witty commentary for these award thingies! I’m not too sure if I know enough people to nominate for this award but I’ll give it a go and try to write something up! I’m also in the midst of writing a review for Inside, a spiritual successor of sorts to Limbo, one of your favorite games of all time 😛
