I’ve Taken My First Steps Into a Larger World

You may or may not remember that in my most recent Christmas Special, I mentioned a little something something about wanting to dabble in video game design. Well, I’ve started doing just that. Though I have a long, long (long, long, long) way to go before I’m ready to make my first game, I have begun to pour a few drops of creativity into this bucket of a goal little by little, and I’ve finally managed to animate my very first sprite! Behold!

A Blob...or Something

Obviously, the sprite in question is nothing to write home about. I obviously made the most simple thing I could think of, and gave it the most basic movement I could give it. It in itself is nothing special.

With that said, however, simply creating this almost-jumping blob thing gave me a warm sense of accomplishment. As I’ve stated in the past, making video games is something I’ve always wanted to do since I was the wee-ist of wee tykes. And the simple fact that I created something, and animated it – no matter how stupidly simple it may be – felt so special. Like I’ve taken that very first step in realizing something I’ve always wanted.

Hopefully no one thinks I’m writing this as a means to pat myself on the back (again, look at that thing!), but I do think there’s something worth telling here. If we truly want something that will bring us fulfillment – whether it be creative, intellectual, spiritual, or whatever other category – we just have to push ourselves, and work hard and diligently into making it a reality. It sounds so cliché, but hard work and dedication really do pay off.

Hopefully this nondescript blob-thing is just the tiniest first step in my working towards my very first video game. I shall continue to study, practice and work harder and harder at it, until, hopefully one day, I can make my dream a reality.

I hope you all will do the same. And I’m sure your first step can be a lot better than that blob.

As Obi-Wan Kenobi observed…

Born of cold and winter air and mountain rain combining, the man called Scott is an ancient sorcerer from a long-forgotten realm. He’s more machine now than man, twisted and evil. Or, you know, he could just be some guy who loves video games, animations and cinema who just wanted to write about such things.

True words! I keep telling that to my students! Well, not with those words, that would be a weird coincidence, but you get my point.

Anyway, congrats on your almost-jumping blob! I wish you success in this journey!

  3. Congratulations on making these big steps towards something that’ll surely turn out awesome. Your blob is cute, and you’ll likely look back on these humble beginnings when you’re working on mastering your craft in a while from now. It’s nice to have a record of your first so you can constantly remind yourself that you’re growing and improving!

  4. Happy first sprite! Your blob is really adorable and it reminds of the blobs in the first NES Zelda game 🙂 I know you will continue to get better and I’m looking forward to seeing your progress.
