A Step Forward

Apologies, my dear readers, for the slow updates as of late. I will be back to reviewing more video games and animated films post-haste (including a review for the worst animated movie of all time). As you may remember in a previous blog, I have been delving into the world of game development, so that I can one day make my very own game (preferably more than one. But let’s start with one). This is one of the reasons I’ve been such a slacker like George McFly as of late (that, and that little thing called “real life”).

I figured since I’m taking the time to write this, I may as well share some of the results of my studies. I still have a lot to learn in terms of coding/programming, but so far I’ve really taken to creating/animating sprites pretty quickly if I do say so myself*.

*I do say so myself

Here is my second-ever sprite.

Moon Guard

He’s basically some kind of robot or something. He’s not-so-subtly inspired by the Duke of Zill from Felix the Cat: The Movie, along with Asgore from Undertale and the Bullies from Super Mario 64. I have no clue if he’d ever have a purpose in any game I would potentially make, but I have grown kind of fond of him.

This guy’s just a little more detailed in appearance than my first sprite, though his movement is admittedly much simpler, as he’s basically just breathing heavily (though I did try to add extra details, like steam coming out of the sides of his head when he exhales, and a sparkle on his moon-staff as he raises it up). There are some obvious inconsistencies and flaws with his animation, but practice makes perfect.

I also realize in retrospect that I totally cheated by making the character have no face. But hey, we all have to start somewhere…

I promise I won’t keep wasting precious blog space every time I animate a new sprite. But I do have to say this new creative endeavor of mine is just filling me with a good sense of fulfillment and happiness, so I just had to share something.

Well, I guess that’s all for now. I promise I’ll continue with some real content soon enough.

If you want, feel free to let me know what you think of my goofy little robot or whatever, and whether or not you want to see more such sprites/progress reports in the future or if you just want me to shut up and write reviews. Bye bye for now!

Author: themancalledscott

Born of cold and winter air and mountain rain combining, the man called Scott is an ancient sorcerer from a long-forgotten realm. He’s more machine now than man, twisted and evil. Or, you know, he could just be some guy who loves video games, animations and cinema who just wanted to write about such things.

  1. You say Asgore was an inspiration for your robot character, and before I read that, I was even thinking to myself that he looks like he wouldn’t be out of place in Undertale. It’ll be cool to see what kind of game you end up creating! Have you thought of a genre?

    1. Wow, thanks for the compliment. Having something I made be compared to Undertale is quite a blushing compliment (one of my friends thought the same thing about it).
I think it’s safe to say whatever game I make will be either an RPG or a platformer.

  2. Nice work! I like both of your sprites but this one is my favourite. I’d love to see a post for everything you create on your journey to becoming a professional animator. 🙂

    1. Thank you very much! I am pretty happy with how this guy turned out. I’m trying to make a few more sprites at the moment, I’ll post them when they’re finished, as well as updates on my learning of game development.

Hopefully this can all come together someday for a nice video game.

  3. Nice work on the sprite! Like LightningEllen I would also like to see more posts like this. One day I want to delve into programming and game development too so seeing posts like this give me inspiration.

  4. That’s very impressive! I like your sprite a lot! Like what others are saying, please feel free to share your work on here! If it’s something that brings you such fulfillment and happiness, then I’d certainly love to see what you have to share! Keep it up!

      1. Those two are my favorite genres, so they’re both solid picks. It’s hard to choose, but I’d lean towards RPG just because there’s usually more you can do with it. But honestly, they’re both great genres so you should go with what you’d like to see!
