Where My 2016 Awards At? (Also Something About Undertale)

We’re a third of the way through February, and I have yet to do my annual video game and movie awards. I know your life revolves around such things, so surely you are in a panic wondering where they went. Fret not, dear childrens, for my annual awards are on the way.

Once again, real life and other endeavors have been postponing some of my writings here, and even some of my gaming time. I’ve only just started playing Final Fantasy XV and a couple of other 2016 favorites, so I’m waiting until I put a little more time into them before I make any final decisions.

My video game awards will be arriving shortly. As for my movie awards, I may simply do my list of top 10 films of 2016 this year, instead of awarding different categories and such. Not because I think any less of movies than I do of games (they are both my great loves), but just for time purposes.

So yeah, that’s going to happen soon, along with a few more reviews for games and movies, and perhaps another update or two on how my game making/sprite animating is going.

Also, in an entirely unrelated note, I think I’m going to be upping my score of Undertale from a 9.0 to a 9.5. That game has just really stuck with me. The only question is, on my 10 and 9.5 games page, do I list Undertale from the date I originally reviewed it, or the date when I upped it to a 9.5?

Oh well. Trifles. Just look forward to the crap I write and enjoy Undertale and stuff.

  1. Good choice with the upped score for Undertale! It’s one of those games that get better the more you let it linger in your mind. That was the case for Earthbound for me too. Undertale is worthy of it though. I guess when you upped the date to 9.5 would be a good decision from a historian standpoint. Then you might remember the circumstances surrounding the timeframe when you increased the score. Up to you though, haha!

    1. I decided to place Undertale in between Super Mario Maker and Bloodborne, which is chronologically where it would be placed. But I included an asterisk on its review date with a short snippet explaining that it was raised at a later date.

  2. Ah, so you decided to upgrade the score you gave Undertale, did you? Yeah, I upgraded it myself after some consideration because it really is just that good; it’s now the most recent 10/10 I’ve awarded. I would even go as far as saying it’s a case where the student surpassed the master (though Earthbound is definitely a classic as well). I say the date should remain the same unless you intend on rewriting the review.

I’ve been kind of slacking on 2016 games, but I’d say, as of now, Fire Emblem: Fates is my favorite game from that year. It seemed to be a pretty solid year for gaming (it and 2015 were major improvements over 2014).

    1. There definitely is something special about Undertale. I can understand why you’d give it a 10.

I placed it under when it was initially reviewed, with an asterisk explanation about its original score. You can see all that here. https://wizarddojo.com/game-reviews/10-and-9-5-games/

I haven’t played Fire Emblem Fates (the wallet! She can’t take any more captain!), but there certainly were some great games in 2016 and 2015. I even really liked 2014, but maybe that’s because I own a Wii U and that the Wii U indisputably kicked ass. Seriously, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros., Bayonetta 2 and DKC: Tropical Freeze in the same year. I hope Nintendo can repeat something like that in 2017 with the Switch. Especially since I’m probably going to be slowing down on the number of games I buy and the amount of time I spend playing them, due to financial reasons and because I have to dedicate more time to figuring out how to make a game of my own. In the coming months I’m really going to have to pick and choose carefully.

  3. Quick question: Final Fantasy XV, worth getting? I haven’t played all the way through an FF game in a while, and I can’t afford to pick up many games these days, but XV looks decent enough to make me think I should splash out!

    1. Admittedly, I’m not very far in FFXV yet (so a review is still a while off), but I have enjoyed what I’ve played so far. The action is pretty fun, and it has an interesting road trip/buddy movie feel to it. I’m still not sure exactly how strongly I like it, since I need to play a bit more first, but I’m enjoying it so far.
